Beyoncé received 9 Grammy nominations for Lemonade and won two. SHE ONLY WON TWO. This was a surprise to many, but should it have been?
For almost 20 years we watched as Black artists were snubbed time and time again. Beyoncé getting snubbed was not even the worst Grammy moment of all time for Black people. Remember when Kendrick lost to Macklemore for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album?
Adele and Beyoncé were both nominated for: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Adele won all of these categories. Now, do not get me wrong, I LOVE Adele. “Hello” is an amazing song, “25” is an amazing album, but it is NOT better than “Lemonade.” I was neither surprised or upset that Adele won Song of the Year and Record of the Year, but for her to win Album of the Year, I was livid.
In the words of J. Cole…
History repeats itself and that’s just how it goes
Same way that these rappers always bite each others flows
Same thing that my nigga Elvis did with Rock n Roll
Justin Timberlake, Eminem and then Macklemore
While silly niggas argue over who gon’ snatch the crown
Look around, my nigga, white people have snatched the sound
This year I’ll prolly go to the awards dappered down
Watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile
I’m just playin’, but all good jokes contain true shit
Oh the irony…
I really try to give these “Black and White” moments the benefit of the doubt, but this is CLEARLY an issue. People on Twitter shared my frustration…
#Lemonade was performance art. Lemonade was a movement. Lemonade was a story, a journey, a protest. Lemonade was MORE than JUST an album.

Kendrick Lamar was pissed too…
I just spoke to kdot. He’s really up set about the Queen B not getting her album of the year trophy.

But hey, at least Bey won Best Urban Contemporary Album…
#lemonade was groundbreaking on every level.
Visuals, vocals, lyrics, production…
I love Adele-but I genuinely don’t get it.

The most ironic part of Beyoncé losing Album of the Year was the message behind “Lemonade.”
My intention for ‘Lemonade’ was to create a body of work that would give a voice to our pain, our struggles and our history. -Beyoncé
So Beyoncé released an entire album about the tribulations of Black people, only to live the struggle on live TV. Catch her full speech here…

On a lighter note, at least the person she lost to is a member of the Beyhive. She rocked a lemon pin last night…

AND she gave Beyoncé the recognition she deserved…

The fact that Adele was the winner created more irony. Beyoncé was snubbed by a member of her own hive. It seemed like a bittersweet moment for Queen Bey…
And Adele, as any member of the Beyhive would, went hard for her queen!
“I felt like it was [Beyoncé’s] time to win. What the f*** does she have to do to win album of the year?” -Adele
