Olivia Pope and her classic strut will return to our televisions in five weeks.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say Thursday nights on ABC have not been the same without Scandal. Back in May, ABC announced that the show will not make its season six premiere until January 2017. A long six months after its ShondaLand counterparts (Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder) premiered its new seasons. It was speculated that the show was taking a break due to the pregnancy of Keri Washington, who plays Olivia Pope. It turns out, this was not necessarily true. In its September issue, InStyle Magazine confirmed in an interview with Washington that the show continued filming during her pregnancy. Filming while pregnant included cutting designer pants to insert pregnancy bands. You know, those elastic bands that you only see in pregnancy clothes sold at target. This is not the first time Washington has filmed the show while pregnant. She has also filmed the show while pregnant during season three with her first born, Isabelle. Whether or not the show did a good job at hiding her pregnancy is a different story.
Any who, in case the long break caused you to forget where the show left off, let’s do a small recap. The season started with Fitz and Olivia making their relationship/affair very public. Olivia was pregnant, and then she wasn’t, courtesy of planned parenthood. Soon after she broke up with Fitz because she was tired of being “First Lady.” Fitz then became America’s most eligible bachelor, and America’s biggest playboy. Meanwhile, Olivia runs back to her constant rebound, Jake. Who was too busy becoming BFFs with her dad, getting engaged to some random woman, and then murdering that woman’s father. Outside of the Olivia, Fitz, and Jake love triangle, we watched Mellie run for president against Susan Ross on the Republican ticket. Frankie Vargas was also running for office on the Democratic ticket with Cyrus as his campaign manager. The candidates spent half of the season trying to sabotage each other for the presidency. The season left off with Mellie winning the Republican primary and Jake being forced on the ticket by Olivia as her running mate. By forcing Jake to run for office with Mellie, Olivia became the person who she never wanted to be like. Her father.
Fans are still in the dark about what to expect for season six of the show, other than Olivia’s new found obsession to have power seen in the season six trailer. Still, I am happy to have TGIT, back as my Thursday ritual. My only hope is that it was worth the wait. Check out the season six trailer below.
TGIT returns January 19 at 8 p.m, starting with “Grey’s Anatomy” followed by “Scandal” at 9 p.m. and “How to Get Away with Murder” at 10 p.m.
